Your First Step... buying a home is to ask yourself  WHY  you want to buy a home:  is it to stop paying rent?  ...start building equity?  ...have a place of your own?  ...raise a family?  ...entertain business associates?  ...move up to a bigger house?
Now, list  WHAT  kind of home you'd like... how much space do you need? many bedrooms?  ...garage?  ...privacy?  ...level entry?  ...are stairs acceptable?  ...newer home?  ...fixer upper?

Then,  WHERE  you would like to be, what area of town?... near schools?  ...near recreational opportunities / centers? close to your employment do you want to be? city transit?  Be specific!  Separate the "must haves" and the "want to haves."

Second Step: Loan Pre-Qualification...

Once you have thought about the Why - the What and the Where... your next step  is to get pre-qualified with a mortgage  company or bank.
